I am really quite excited to be part of this and am hoping it will break my 5-year hiatus from art. Working at the Society is great, but it really puts pressure on me to create good art when I’m surrounding by such talented colleagues. I think sharing this art on a blog with people I admire so much will force me to follow through with it. It will be interesting to see if my confidence builds in 28 days.

American cartoonist and author Lynda Barry (born January 2, 1956) is as much a storyteller as she is a visual philosopher. From her 1999 graphic-novel-turned-off-Broadway-hit The Good Times Are Killing Me, exploring the interracial relationship between two girls, to her long-running, deeply empathic weekly comic strip Ernie Pook’s Comeek, Barry’s instantly recognizable works are invariably imbued with equal parts humor, irreverence, sensitivity, and wisdom.

In 2009, her graphic novel What Is, published the previous year, received an Eisner Award for Best Reality-Based Work. But perhaps the most remarkable quality of Barry’s work is precisely its defiance of reality — the whimsy and wit with which she blurs the line between the real and, to borrow Sartre’s term, the irreal to peel away at some simple truth or grand complexity of what it means to be human.

While attending an all-girl Catholic school, my art teacher gave me a copy of Maus because she knew it would be important to me. I was around 15 years old and was a shy, Jew(ish) girl who preferred to paint and draw on her free time instead of going to parties and socializing.

In 1939 my Grandmother was 15 years old and I imagine she was the same shy, introvert that I once was. But instead of going to school she was emigrating to America from Vienna, leaving behind her parents and separating from her brother who went to England. This is my Grandmother a few years before she made the trip:

There was an unspoken rule in my family that you didn’t bring up the past. From what I’ve learned, my great-grandparents were killed at the Dachau concentration camp. My great-grandfather’s name was Max and my great-grandmother’s name was Cecilia. Max was known as “the handsomest man in Vienna.” I don’t know what they did for a living or much else except that they sent my Grandmother to New York City before the nazis occupied Austria.

Sometimes I look at pictures from the camp and wonder, “are you my family?” It’s horribly sad and depressing, but then I think of myself living in this city and working and thriving and I can’t help but think we won.

When my Grandmother passed away, a few years before I moved to this city, we found a bunch of her photos. I was looking through them one day when I had to do a double take. For a moment I thought I was looking at myself. Here she is on the right, and there I am on the left:

The resemblance is pretty crazy and really cool. I’m glad I look like her. She was a survivor. And I’d like to think that my ancestors would be pretty proud.

SI on the Fly!: January Brunch and Lecture Event!

SI on the Fly!: January Brunch and Lecture Event!:
societyillustrators:

Right now I’m putting together my workout schedule and I’m totally pumped about how this will change by the end of 2013!

wnycradiolab:

Introducing The Reconstructionists – a yearlong illustrated celebration of trailblazing women across art, science and literature, who have changed the way we define ourselves as a culture and live our lives as individuals of any gender.

Below is a picture of my view (I try to stay in the middle of the lane because I get vertigo if I look at the scenery around me).

Today I took it easy and covered 2.5 miles, but added some ab work to my routine to help with my core. I tried out ReachYourPeak’s new 6 minute workout and can tell you that I definitely struggled through it. The reverse jumping jacks were the most difficult for me because my legs still hurt from yesterday’s run, and the planks made me shake. I think with practice I’ll get better at it but right now I’m a little slow because I don’t know the correct posture.

This year I have four big races planned: The 200 mile Ragnar Relay in Cape Cod (May), the NYC Tri (July), the Baltimore Half Marathon (October), and the NYC Marathon (November). I’m really looking forward to all of these races and am planning on chronicling my progress here. It’s a way to keep me motivated and to find new tips and techniques while sharing my own.

reachyourpeak:

To put a finer point on it, I’m the type of person who doesn’t find it painful to be alone. I find spending an hour or two every day running alone, not speaking to anyone, as well as four or five hours alone at my desk, to be neither difficult nor boring. I’ve had this tendency ever since I was young, when, given a choice, I much preferred reading books on my own or concentrating on listening to music over being with someone else. I could always think of things to do by myself.”

-
Haruki Murakami, What I Talk About When I Talk About Running (via bookmania)
